Project Cars: Nigel's BMW E30 M3 1986

When we acquired the car it was a standard 2.3L producing 185bhp in a standard form. It has been transformed from road car, fast road car, road/track car, track car and now a fully fledged race car with 300bhp under the bonnet. It now drives, feels, sounds and looks every bit like a race car. Along the way we have made many developments through trial and error of different cam combinations from mild 272 to wild 320 degree cams, compression ratios and generally what works and what doesn't.

S14 Engine:

- 2.5 litre producing 300bhp

- Lightened and balanced bottom end

- 95mm high compression JE pistons

- Ported 215bhp cylinder head with 1mm oversize stainless steel inlet valves

- Uprated valve springs with titanium retainers

- Shim under bucket valve train

- Schrick 308 inlet cam and 284 exhaust cam.

- 48mm throttle bodies

- Group A 8 injector carbon fibre airbox with ITG filter

- Zero Exhaust stainless 4 into 1 exhaust manifold

- Zero Exhaust stainless exhaust system

- Distributorless ignition system

- MBE engine management

- Ultra light weight flywheel

- Twin plate paddle clutch

- Custom made engine loom

Chassis:

- Leda coil over suspension, modified by BAD to allow more travel at a lower ride height

- Spherical bearings fitted where possible with poly bushes and solid alloy bushes fitted everywhere else.

- Adjustable camber/castor front top mounts

- Full multi point weld in roll cage, with front and rear suspension pick ups

- AP 4 pot calipers up front with 330mm brake discs

Interior:

- Race Technology DL1 data logger in conjunction with Dash 2 display unit and ECU data streaming for logging.

- Custom made body harness

- Plumbed in Life Line Fire Extinguisher

- Cobra Evolution seat with Schroth 6 point harness

And now of course styled in our highly visible team BMsport livery of grey and orange.
