Just replaced a customers head gasket, this was the second time it had failed in his ownership over a short space of time so he approached us. We recommended that he should return to the garage as it should be covered under their warranty. He didn’t want to return to said garage that repaired it so we carried out the repair. Out of curiosity we asked to see his invoice for the failed repair, it was quite a detailed invoice, it was cheap, but it didn’t even have new head bolts, oil, oil filter or antifreeze listed and the head gasket wasn’t even a genuine BMW item! So really just half a job. Now a days most bolts are of the stretch design and are a once use only item. So when you’re looking for a cheaper quote maybe they’ll have a price you’re happy with but will it give you the peace of mind? Maybe that’ll be a case of “buy cheap, buy twice!”
